Vasectomy is the most common urological procedure performed in America. It is a simple, safe and effective means of permanent contraception and employed by approximately 7% of married couples. It entails surgically interrupting the left and right vas deferens. The vas deferens are the tubes that drain the testicles of sperm. When a vasectomy is correctly performed, the testicles no longer deliver sperm into the ejaculate. Men are still able to perform sexually and continue to have a normal amount of ejaculate. There have been multiple studies demonstrating vasectomies are perfectly safe with no long term complications. Rarely chronic pain occurs, but this is seen in perhaps 1 in 1000 patients. The procedure is done under local anesthesia and is typically well tolerated.
