Ureteral Cancer

The ureter is the tube that drains the kidney into the bladder (see figure).  Ureteral cancer is an uncommon cancer.  Symptoms include blood in the urine (microscopic or gross – see blood in urine link for further discussion), weight loss, burning/frequent/urgent urination and flank or back pain.  Known risk factors are smoking, industrial exposure to aromatic amines in dyes, paints, solvents, leather dust, inks, combustion products, rubber, and textiles and a history of chemotherapy with cyclophosphamide.  Treatments depend on the invasiveness and aggressiveness of the cancer and include open, laparoscopic and minimally invasive (no incisions) surgery.  Once treatment for the cancer is performed, life-long follow-up is needed because of very high rates of recurrence in the bladder or opposite kidney and ureter.
